The reason behind the product

Born out of a problem faced on the job.

QuercusQuote is being built by an arborist, contractor and small-business owner who wanted a more dependable way to work out what tree jobs genuinely need to earn.

01The starting point

Good work can still be badly priced.

Tree work has no shortage of judgement. Access, tree condition, rigging, weather, crew mix, plant, disposal and the unknown all affect the day. Yet the quote can still end up being a round number shaped by instinct, a competitor’s price or the fear of losing the job.

The problem is not that experience is unimportant. Experience is essential. The problem is that experience has to carry too many hidden figures at once.

02The business reality

The job pays for more than the hours on site.

A tree business also has to carry vehicles, insurance, equipment, maintenance, training, administration and the owner’s time spent visiting sites and writing estimates before work is won. If those costs are not visible while pricing, they do not disappear. They simply reduce what is left.

QuercusQuote started as a way to bring those figures into the decision without making the quoting process impractical—and to help business owners and contractors turn their own completed-job history into practical insight for the next quote.

03The wider aim

A practical stand against the race to the bottom.

One piece of software cannot set an industry’s prices, and it should not try. But wider adoption of sound job-costing habits can help more firms understand when a price is unsustainable.

That matters beyond an individual margin. A healthier price can support safer investment, better equipment, training, reliable crews and the time needed to do work properly. QuercusQuote is intended to make that discipline easier—not to tell every arborist to charge the same.

Founder experience

A broad view of tree work—and the businesses behind it.

I went straight into subcontracting, which gave me experience across a wide range of tree-care companies rather than inside only one way of working. I have worked as a lead climber and contract climber, and I am a member of the Royal Forestry Society. My wider working-at-height background includes rope access and building zipwires, alongside rock climbing.

I have also run my own small business, so I know how difficult it can be to manage quoting, costs, equipment, administration and cash flow on top of the physical and mental stresses of tree work. Across the companies I have contracted for, I have seen good people struggle and the same costly mistakes recur: jobs priced by instinct, overheads overlooked, quoting time treated as free and firms undercutting one another without always knowing their real costs.

That does not only damage one job. It can drag expectations and prices down across the trade. QuercusQuote is my attempt to turn that first-hand experience into a practical tool—helping individual businesses protect their margin while supporting a healthier, more sustainable standard of pricing across the industry.
